Ireland Could Apply New Gambling Taxes
Things seemed to be moving in the right direction for gambling in Ireland. There are plenty of online casinos and sportsbooks offering popular slot games, blackjack, poker and more. Online gamblers were happy and casino operators couldn’t complain. However, word is going around that there are going to be changes to the Irish gambling laws as a part of December’s budget review in the country.
Right now, it is all speculation but if it were to be true it would mean an increment in the existing 1% tax on gambling which would extend to include online casino and sportsbooks operators. All of these suppositions have many internet gambling providers nervous and on the lookout to see what will happen next. There’s also another rumor going around that has said that a 2% tax might also be levied on players who win money at online casinos and sportsbooks in Ireland. This possibility has also put a lot of people on high alert. Gambling operators are closely waiting for signs to come about this Ireland’s December budget warily and waiting to see what Finance Minister, Brian Lenihan will do.
Casino operators now worry that if these new taxes area approved they will end up loosing their customers to other better offers. They are also looking at the possibility of loosing a great deal of money and Irish betting shops could close down if such taxes were introduced, despite the government being optimistic that it can raise £60 billion each year on these winnings. “We believe that 400 of the 1,200 would shut up overnight. It would kill jobs in the industry,” said the Irish Bookmakers’ Association, which also said that such a move by the government would drive players to betting services out the country in order to avoid paying taxes on their winnings.
